GR. 2 – “INSECTS”

September 28th, 2011 Ms. Mary Rose Domingo No comments

The Grade 2 artists are ready to venture to a new project.  They are to learn the adaptation of the smallest animals in the world – insects.  In this lesson, the students are to discover how insects adapt to its environment.  Through videos, books, and actual observation around the school garden, the students will learn how tiny insects get their food, where they leave and protect themselves from predators.  In their sketchbook, they are to draw the body parts and the different views (front, top, back and bottom) of the insects of their choice: Lady bug, spider, bee, dragon fly, scorpions, or an ant.  Using this guide, the students are to construct a 3Dimensional insect by crunching, twisting, rolling, and moulding with newspapers, tapes, wires and plaster bandages.  They will learn how to manipulate the plaster bandages to make two or three connected body parts of the model.  Lastly, they will paint their insects with tempera paint and finish it off with acrylic gloss to make the insect look more alive!

GR. 3 – TINTS AND SHADES

This Semester, the  Grade 3 artist will start with a very exciting lesson on Painting.  First they will discover how any of the two Primary colours change when they are mixed together.  They will be creating a painting using Tints and Shades of just one colour of their choice using white and black colour.  The students will learn to control their brush strokes and how to mix and apply the paints on their design.  In the process of mixing one colour with white and black (depending on the ratio of the paint),  the students will understand how tonal value of the Tints and Shades change.  With this concept, students will learn to explore the application of graduation ( dark to light, light to dark ) of the colour in their artwork using tempera paint.   They will be given an exercise for the Secondary colour mixing using swirls and doodles as their design.

To make it more exciting, they are to create a mix media in this project.  Through a slideshow, the students will see an example of how the Bower Bird collect  coloured materials to build the nest for their eggs.  This will give the students an idea on how to collect and create a painted mix media model using  Tints and Shades process.  The students will be asked to bring in old/recyclable materials, old rubber shoes, old caps, plastic bottles, lids, markers, etc.  These materials will enhance the creativity and painting of the design they will create: sculpture, mobiles, or a mural.  Once they have finished their research, planning and design, they will start creating their project….I can’t wait to see their final artwork.

Gr.1 – DISCOVERING ABSTRACT PAINTING

September 28th, 2011 Ms. Mary Rose Domingo No comments

Grade 1 artists are currently on discovering Primary and Secondary colours.  They were introduced to secondary colours first and given a task on how to get primary colours from mixing two or three secondary colours.  This will allow the students to understand, explore and find out how Primary and Secondary colours are created using tempera paints.  Next, (discovering secondary colours)  they will be introduced to mixing primary colours to create secondary colour by putting the colour in between an unfolded drawing paper.  The students then will fold the paper with paint inside and press gently the paper using the finger tips in circular motion in different direction, the purpose for this is to mix the colour inside of the folded paper like a cake beater.  They will open the paper slowly and see what colour they have created and later repeat them this time using all the primary colours and observe the different colours it created.  The students will then cut the paper following the shape of the edges of the colour leaving 1/8″ of the paper, creating small creatures on their artworks.  They can explore it by adding googly eyes or cut out paper eyes for their creatures.  The creatures will be hanged around the art room looking like colourful butterflies, bugs, dragonflies and even dragons flying.  The students will surely be thrilled with their creatures!

All ARTISTS ARE CHILDREN!

Welcome back to a new creative school year!  The Grade 1 artists will be busy creating  an art piece for their classroom collaboration project. We look forward to the results of their creativity.

Grade 1 – WARM and COOL COLOURS

Vincent Van Gogh, famous for his bright vivid primary and secondary colours, did not paint exactly what he saw. He exaggerated and distorted the shapes and lines of his subjects to communicate the interest of his thoughts and emotions.  Van Gogh did not sketch his drawing first but painted straight on the canvas applying bright warm and cool colours with strong thick strokes (impasto Technique)

Students were shown videos of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings and were informed of the difference between warm and cool colours.  They were explained how artists distinguish warm and cool colours and how they apply it in their artworks.

The students explored the concept of warm and cool colours in a simple way in this unit. The student drew a “Doodle” design on a size A3 drawing paper and coloured it one side with a warm coloured marker and the other side with a cool coloured marker.

The next project was interesting for the students.  The students were to identify the warm and cool colours by using the recycled materials. They were to make a design on a box board with black marker and glue the recycled materials on it (beads, bottle tops, sequense, old yarns, pipe cleaners etc). The students work turned out to be an example of a very creative abstract warm and cool artwork.  Check out their works!

Grade 2 – TIE DYE T-SHIRTS

After their Batik making, the students were introduced to Tie Dye making.  They were shown videos of different styles of “how to Tie Dye” t-shirts.  The teacher demonstrated how to fold the shirts in such a way that when they paint it with their choice of colour, the folded or creased areas will stay unpainted.

There are different ways of folding the shirts; the v-shape, fan folding, double rolling, twisting of the shirt and the oldest technique -tying with rubber bands.  Once the students rolled or folded their t-shirts, they have secured it with a rubber band firmly.  They dyed the shirts by painting on the colour or by dipping it in a bowl of dye paint. The t-shirts were left out to dry for a few days and rinsed well with water before  leaving it out under the sun for final drying.  Check out the students tie dye shirts!

Grade 2 – BATIK

Batik is a technique in which wax is applied in a pattern on cloth to resist absorption of colour in a dye bath or dye paint application.

The Grade 2 students had a blast with their Batik making.  They were shown videos on how batik is done and were informed on how wax resisted dye paint on the cloth.

The student practiced on a size A3 paper, drawing the different planets in the universe using oil pastel or cray pas.  After which, using a fine brush, they painted the planet with different dye colours and covered the background with dark colour.  The students saw the dye paint resisting the oil pastel.

In the next project, the students were able to work on a 15” x 15” piece of cotton cloth for their actual batik making.  The teacher showed them how to use the tjanting tool with the melted wax. At this point, the students have put on their aprons.

The students designed a pattern on the cloth with pencil and then traced the line with melted wax using the tjanting tool.  The teacher reminded the students to be careful and avoid getting melted wax on their hands. From here the students learned to control their hands when manoeuvring the tool.

After the wax has set/dried on their cloth, the students applied paint using a fine brush and least 4 colours on their design.  Their Batik artworks were really amazing, check out their works!

Grade 3 – SEWING

Sewing is the oldest craft of the textile arts.  It is the craft of attaching materials by stitching thread using a needle. Early humans (Stone Age) sewed fur and animal skins together with needles crafted from bones, antlers, and ivory as their needles and threads made out of ligaments, catgut and dried veins. For thousands of years sewing was intricately done by hand and with the invention of sewing machines, mass production of sewn materials became possible.  However, nothing can compare to the quality of hand sewn art as a means of creative expression.

The Grade 3 students were shown pictures of various kinds of stitches from different cultures. They were introduced to the different ways of how to sew and the various uses of fabric from different cultures. The teacher discussed the different types of sewing (plain and fancy sewing) and the different types of direction in sewing (running stitch, backstitch, blanket stitch, and the cross stitch). To practice the types of stitching, the students were asked to design and sew their names on a bookmark.

The students began the project by designing their names on graphic paper to use as a sewing pattern. They were then provided with a piece of plastic mesh and a craft needle (craft needles have wider hole/eye) threaded with an arm’s length of yarn in their choice of colour.  At this point, the teacher demonstrated how to do cross, blanket, running, and blanket stitches using their craft needle & thread.

The teacher instructed the students to try the different types of stitches to make their work fancy.  The students gently pushed the needle through the plastic mesh from the backside, careful not to poke their friends, pulling the thread from the front and leaving a 2” yarn tail at the back.
